a. Understanding the demand consists of two parts:

i. Gather the past demand for the business process based on available reporting/systems. Distinguish for different products/services.
Try to distinguish runners, repeaters and strangers.
ii. Investigate if future demand is changing, and if so, how?

This is typically done with product management or commercial equivalent.

b. Calculate the process capability (what productivity is possible?) using the times investigated in step 1 given the available resources.

c. Investigate the current productivity for the business. Distinguish different products/services when applicable.
